In some cases, particularly if the infection appears to be viral, the provider may recommend a wait-and-see approach, as many infections resolve on their own. Pain management is a primary goal, and over-the-counter pain relievers may be suggested to alleviate discomfort. If the infection is determined to be bacterial or is particularly severe, a course of antibiotics might be prescribed.
